Noroton is thrilled and honored to be hosting Sonar Worlds this year - the third time in 25 years.
The Sonar Class Association was founded in 1980 by Noroton members and held North American Championships for the first 20 years. Noroton members including Peter Galloway, Karl Ziegler and Craig Sinclair were often the winning skippers of these major events. In 2000 the Class was granted international status and the boat was selected as a three-person Paralympic keelboat, after which the Class started running World Championships. Noroton hosted the first Sonar Worlds in late September 2001 (just a week after the tragedy on 9/11), won by Mark Ploch. Noroton's Steve Shepstone won the Worlds 3 times, and past Commodore Bobby Lawrence won the most recent Worlds in 2022.
